Hong Kong has been slammed by Typhoon Wipha, triggering the city’s highest possible storm warning. As reported by The Guardian, the Hong Kong Observatory issued a rare T10 hurricane alert, signalling sustained winds over 118 km/h and posing a “considerable threat” to the densely populated city.

With the typhoon’s eyewall striking the southern part of the territory, chaos followed: around 500 flights were cancelled, classes were suspended across the city, and government shelters filled with evacuees. Train services were halted in open sections, and storm surges battered the eastern coast of Hong Kong Island.

Wipha’s path continues westward toward Macau, Zhuhai, and eventually Vietnam. In the Philippines, where the storm already left a trail of destruction, two people remain missing.

While hurricanes and typhoons have always existed, scientists have repeatedly warned that Climate change is intensifying these storms—making them wetter, windier, and more unpredictable. As sea surface temperatures rise, so does the energy available for cyclones like Wipha. Extreme weather isn’t some distant threat—it’s happening right now.

Yet governments and corporations continue to delay meaningful action. Fossil fuel emissions are still rising. Rainforests are still being cleared. Oceans are still warming. And the most vulnerable communities are paying the price.

We can’t afford to treat these storms as isolated events anymore. Typhoon Wipha is part of a larger planetary emergency driven by human activity. It’s time to act like it.

Cut meat and dairy, go plant-based!. Say no to fast fashion. Support climate policy. Push for renewables. And vote for leaders who don’t pretend storms like Wipha are just “natural disasters.”
