Life-sized animal puppets are set to take center stage in one of the most ambitious climate awareness campaigns of the year. From April through August 2025, THE HERDS, a global art installation developed by The Walk Productions, will journey 20,000 kilometers from the Congo Basin to the Arctic Circle—with backing from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
According to WWF’s official statement, the project aims to reconnect people with nature and stir action ahead of the COP30 UN Climate Conference in Brazil this November. The giant puppets, representing wildlife fleeing climate chaos, are made primarily from recycled materials and are brought to life by local communities along the route. Cities including Kinshasa, Madrid, London, and Stockholm will host free performances and workshops as the HERDS move north.
Daudi Sumba, WWF’s Chief Conservation Officer, said the project helps us “recognize the commonalities that span cultures and communities” while highlighting the escalating toll of Climate change and biodiversity loss. With animal populations declining by an average of 73% since 1970, WWF’s Living Planet Report confirms that the natural world is in crisis—and this crisis is accelerating.
The installation is more than art—it’s activism. It’s a call to remember that Climate change doesn’t just impact polar bears and coral reefs. It affects all life, including our own. “Climate change is knocking on all of our doors,” said Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, WWF’s Global Climate and Energy Lead.
This summer, as these symbolic animals march across continents, they’ll bring a powerful message: we must change how we live—fast.
Now more than ever, we need to stand up for the planet. Reduce your consumption, go plant-based, Support Conservation efforts, and show up for nature. Because when the animals move, we should too.
