The price of everyday food is spiking worldwide—and Climate change is to blame. According to a new study led by Maximillian Kotz of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, extreme weather between 2022 and 2024 drove food prices to historic highs in countries across the globe. The research, cited by CNN, shows how heatwaves, droughts, and floods disrupted harvests and pushed food costs far beyond normal trends.
California and Arizona saw vegetable prices soar by 80% in November 2022 after a brutal summer of heat and water shortages. In Europe, olive oil prices jumped by 50% in early 2024 following prolonged droughts in Italy and Spain. Japan experienced a 48% surge in rice prices after back-to-back record-breaking summers. Even staples like cabbage and cocoa weren’t spared—cabbage cost 70% more in South Korea, and cocoa prices rocketed 280% after a heatwave scorched crops in Ghana and Ivory Coast.
These price shocks aren’t just economic—they’re deeply personal. As healthy food becomes less affordable, low-income families are forced to cut back on fruits, vegetables, and other essentials, increasing the risk of malnutrition, heart disease, and diabetes. And as food prices rise, so does the risk of inflation, political instability, and social unrest.
Kotz, who also works with the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, warns that “until we get to net-zero emissions, extreme weather will only get worse.” And that means more food crises in more places.
The takeaway is simple but urgent: climate change isn’t just about sea levels or polar bears—it’s hitting our plates and our wallets. We need to cut emissions, Support sustainable agriculture, and demand that governments stop subsidizing destructive meat and dairy industries. Let’s fight for a food system that protects people, animals, and the planet—because the status quo is too costly to stomach.
