Forest fires in the prefecture of Evros in northern Greece in the biggest fire ever in Europe on August 23, 2023

A surge of wildfires has erupted in southern Europe, prompting evacuations and significant devastation in Greece, Turkey, and Syria. Authorities have deployed helicopters and water-dropping planes in a desperate attempt to contain the blazes, which have been exacerbated by soaring temperatures, strong winds, and dry conditions. In Turkey’s Aegean coastal province of İzmir, fires broke out at multiple locations, claiming lives and forcing the evacuation of thousands. The blazes have also caused the destruction of homes and widespread damage to the environment. Tragically, two individuals have died, including a forestry worker who was trying to contain the fire near the town of Odemis.

Similarly, in Greece, new fires erupted south of Athens, triggering evacuations in coastal areas. Firefighting efforts were intensified as the blaze spread rapidly, threatening the lives of residents and tourists alike. In Crete, more than 5,000 people were evacuated from the south coast as the fire consumed large swaths of land, with authorities estimating that around 3,700 acres have already burned. While these wildfires are common in the region during the summer, experts warn that Climate change is significantly worsening the severity and frequency of such events.

In Syria, fires have spread through mountainous areas in Latakia province, complicating firefighting efforts. Unexploded ordnance from previous conflicts poses an additional hazard, further impeding the efforts of emergency crews. As the fires rage, the region faces not only environmental destruction but also loss of life and damage to livelihoods.

The fires in Greece, Turkey, and Syria serve as stark reminders of the growing threats posed by Climate change. As heatwaves and extreme weather become more frequent, it is crucial that we take action to address the root causes of these devastating wildfires.

The time to act on climate change is now. We must advocate for stronger environmental protections, push for policies that mitigate climate risks, and Support sustainable practices that protect our planet.
