Climate change is heating up the planet—and also courtrooms. Around the world, peaceful climate activists are being hit with harsh punishments for standing up to fossil fuel giants. From Australia to the UK and the U.S., governments are passing new laws that critics say are designed to silence environmental dissent.
According to Deutsche Welle’s Stuart Braun, recent protests like the 2024 Rising Tide blockade of Newcastle’s coal port—where 170 people were arrested—have triggered aggressive legal responses. In New South Wales, nonviolent protesters now face up to two years in jail under new laws. Even kayaking near a coal ship can be considered a crime.
The crackdown isn’t limited to Australia. In the UK, five Just Stop Oil members were sentenced to up to five years in prison for blocking a motorway—nearly the same penalty as for aggravated assault. These were the longest prison terms ever handed down for peaceful protest in Britain. Over 95% of charges under the UK’s updated Public Order Act have targeted environmental protesters, according to research from the University of Bristol.
Meanwhile, corporate legal attacks are also rising. In the U.S., Greenpeace was ordered to pay over $660 million in damages after opposing the Dakota Access Pipeline—a move that could shut down its U.S. operations. These lawsuits, known as SLAPPs (Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation), are increasingly used to bankrupt protest groups.
This wave of suppression shows a disturbing pattern: those who speak out for the planet are being criminalized, sued, and even killed. Over 2,000 environmental defenders have been murdered since 2012.
If saving the planet is treated like a crime, it’s time to question who these laws really serve. The fossil fuel industry? Or the future?
Join the movement. Speak out, stand up, and Support climate defenders—before it becomes illegal to care.
