Newly elected Pope Leo XIV, spiritual leader of the Catholic Church, during his first public appearance. Vatican, Italy - 2025 May 8

The newly elected Pope Leo XIV is making it clear—Climate change can’t wait. In his first few days as head of the Catholic Church, he’s already spoken out about the urgent need to move “from words to action” on Global warming. According to ABC News, Leo, born Robert Francis Prevost, carries forward the legacy of Pope Francis, who took historic steps to align the Vatican with environmental causes.

At a 2024 seminar in Rome focused on the environmental crisis, Leo warned against the dangers of unchecked technological advancement and praised the Vatican’s efforts to slash its carbon emissions through solar panels and electric vehicles. He called for a “relationship of reciprocity” with nature, not a “tyrannical” one—language that resonates deeply with environmental and animal advocates alike.

Leo’s commitment is grounded in Catholic Social Doctrine, which emphasizes protecting vulnerable communities—many of whom are hardest hit by rising sea levels, wildfires, and food insecurity linked to climate change. Leaders in the climate movement, including WWF’s Manuel Pulgar Vidal and the UN Climate Conference’s Ana Toni, have welcomed Leo’s papacy with hope that he’ll energize both faith communities and global leaders.

His background—a mix of American and Peruvian roots—and reputation as a people-first communicator position him to be a powerful voice in the climate conversation. The Laudato Si’ Movement called him a “man of unity, peace, and action for our planet.”

Pope Leo XIV isn’t just offering prayers—he’s calling for planetary protection. If even the Vatican is going electric, what’s stopping the rest of us?

Let’s back leaders who protect people, animals, and the planet. Choose plant-based meals, cut emissions where you can, and Support climate-focused movements that work for a better future for all.
