Pope Francis Brought Climate Change to the Heart of the Church

Pope Francis may be best known as the spiritual leader of 1.4 billion Catholics, but over the last decade, he also emerged as one of the world’s most consistent moral voices on Climate change. As reported by Jeff Brady for NPR, the pope repeatedly called on individuals, corporations, and governments to address global heating caused by burning fossil fuels.

In 2015, his groundbreaking encyclical Laudato Si’ framed Climate change as not just a scientific or political issue, but a spiritual one. It emphasized that harming the planet is deeply connected to social injustice—particularly for the poor and vulnerable communities hit hardest by environmental damage. Francis didn’t hold back, calling the Earth “an immense pile of filth” and condemning wasteful habits in wealthier nations.

His message inspired a global movement. The Laudato Si’ Movement, active in 140 countries, has trained tens of thousands of leaders in environmental action—from planting trees to opposing oil drilling in biodiverse areas like Ecuador’s Yasuní National Park. Even the Archdiocese of Chicago committed to running hundreds of its buildings on renewable energy.

While critics say his message didn’t change minds among political conservatives, Francis’ influence reached far beyond politics. He made it clear that caring for creation is part of living a moral, faith-driven life. That’s something everyone can take to heart—no matter their beliefs.

Let’s follow the pope’s lead. Choose compassion over consumption. Support policies that protect people and planet. And if you’re able, cut back on meat and fossil fuels—it’s one way to show respect for all living beings and the only home we share.
