Gifted Dogs Show Human-Like Understanding of Words

A new study has revealed that some dogs are capable of understanding words in ways that go far beyond what most of us imagine. According to New Atlas, researchers from Hungary’s Eötvös Loránd University found that seven “Gifted Word Learner” dogs could recognize spoken labels not just by how toys looked, but also by how they were used.

This advanced skill, known as “label extension,” has previously only been documented in a handful of non-human animals after years of training in captivity. Remarkably, these dogs – six border collies and one blue heeler – picked it up during regular at-home play sessions with their families. In the study, the dogs were taught two simple commands, “Pull” and “Fetch,” and applied them to toys based on their function. When new toys were introduced without labels, the dogs still managed to bring the right type when asked, showing they could generalize based on use rather than appearance.

Label extension is something human toddlers do instinctively, but seeing it in household pets suggests canine intelligence may be even more sophisticated than we thought. As lead scientist Dr. Claudia Fugazza explained, it’s similar to calling both a hammer and a rock by the same name, since both can be used for the same purpose.

Beyond being a fascinating look at animal cognition, the findings also underscore the deep bonds between humans and animals. These dogs weren’t confined in labs – they were part of loving homes, learning naturally through play. It highlights how providing enrichment and stimulation to our companion animals not only supports their mental health but also reveals their remarkable capacities.

As we continue to learn about the intelligence of dogs and other species, the case for treating all animals with greater respect grows stronger. Every discovery reminds us that the environment we share with them is filled with sentient beings capable of much more than we assume.
