Traveling can be stressful, but for many dog owners, the hardest part isn’t the airport or the hotel—it’s leaving their furry best friend behind. A recent Talker Research survey found that 40% of dog parents “constantly” worry about their pet while away, and more than one in five admit it impacts their ability to enjoy the trip. On average, people miss their pups 13 separate times per day, with feelings of longing setting in less than an hour after departure.

Some owners go so far as to ask their sitters for phone calls or even video chats with their dogs, highlighting just how deep the human-animal bond runs. And while that might sound excessive to non-pet owners, it’s a reflection of how dogs have become true family members. Their health, happiness, and emotional wellbeing are top priorities for guardians who want to ensure they’re cared for in the best way possible while apart.

Boarding facilities and pet hotels are working to ease these anxieties by offering luxury stays, daycare services, and even live-stream cameras so owners can check in at any time. Beyond comfort, the demand also reflects growing awareness about the environment and animal welfare. More people are choosing plant-based dog foods and eco-conscious boarding options, aligning their care choices with a broader commitment to protecting the Earth and all living beings.

It’s no surprise that many people feel guilty when they travel without their pets. After all, dogs provide unconditional love, reduce stress, and remind us daily of the importance of compassion and connection. In many ways, our relationships with animals reflect the values we want to extend more widely—to treat all life with respect and kindness.

If you’re planning a trip, consider how your choices can Support your pet’s happiness while also aligning with sustainable values. Whether that means choosing a plant-based kibble, supporting small local boarding businesses, or spending extra time with your pup before and after, these small steps matter. Caring for animals with love and mindfulness is one way we can all help build a healthier world.
