A new study has found that while no commercial dog food on the market is currently 100% nutritionally complete, plant-based options hold up just as well as traditional meat-based kibbles — and with a few tweaks, they could become a healthier and more sustainable choice for our four-legged companions. According to New Scientist, researchers from the University of Nottingham analyzed 25 dry dog foods and discovered that both meat-based and plant-based diets met core protein and fat requirements but fell short on certain nutrients.

Among the plant-based foods tested, most were only lacking iodine and some B vitamins, deficiencies that could easily be corrected through supplementation or better commercial preparation. With these improvements, vegan and vegetarian dog foods could provide the complete nutrition dogs need while lowering the environmental footprint of the pet food industry.

This matters because producing meat-heavy pet food adds to global greenhouse gas emissions and puts additional strain on the environment. Shifting to plant-forward diets for dogs could help reduce that impact while also aligning with the values of owners who struggle with the ethics of feeding meat to their omnivore pets.

Experts emphasize that dogs, unlike cats, are true omnivores capable of thriving on a wide variety of foods. As long as their essential nutrients are met, they can stay healthy on a carefully supplemented plant-based diet. That said, veterinarians caution against DIY dog diets at home, urging owners to stick to tested and properly formulated commercial foods.

The takeaway? With smarter preparation and a little help from supplements, plant-based kibble could soon rival traditional options in both nutrition and sustainability. By choosing these diets, dog owners can Support the health of their animals while also protecting the Earth.
