According to People, a Belgian Malinois named Ziya is being celebrated for his bravery after protecting his family from an escaped bull during a walk on their California property. The frightening incident, which could have ended far worse, has now earned Ziya a nomination for Nationwide Pet Insurance’s annual Hambone Award, which highlights unusual and inspiring pet insurance claims.
Ziya’s owners were walking on their land when a bull, agitated and loose from a nearby fence, suddenly charged at them. Without hesitation, Ziya leapt in front of his family, shielding them from the bucking animal. The bull struck Ziya in the jaw, knocking out one of his teeth, but the dog’s quick action allowed his family to escape unharmed. His owner Tim described him as “highly protective and always alert,” noting that the pup instinctively guards his loved ones whenever danger arises.
The Hambone Award isn’t just about quirky pet antics —it also highlights the extraordinary loyalty of animals like Ziya. While Ziya has fully recovered, his story sheds light on the human practice of keeping and farming cattle. Bulls are often stressed and confined, which can make encounters like this more likely. The incident serves as a reminder that our choices around animal agriculture not only put farmed animals in unnatural, often cruel conditions but also pose risks for people and pets alike.
Ziya may have flunked out of working-dog training, but his instinct to protect shows why dogs are truly family. Stories like this highlight the incredible bond between humans and animals—and why compassion toward all animals, not just the ones we invite into our homes, matters. Choosing plant-based options and supporting cruelty-free practices helps reduce these risks and creates a safer, kinder world for everyone.
