A nationwide recall has been issued for certain lots of Viva Raw dog and cat food after routine testing detected potential contamination with salmonella and listeria. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that affected products include Viva Ground Beef for Dogs, Viva Beef & Turkey for Puppies, Viva Ground Chicken for Dogs, Viva Chunked Chicken for Dogs, Viva Chicken for Cats, and Viva Pure Chicken.

The products, distributed both directly to customers across the U.S. and to retailers in seven states, were sold as frozen one-pound bricks in vacuum packaging. The FDA warns that contaminated food poses serious risks not only to pets but also to humans handling the products. People exposed may experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, or fever, while pregnant women are especially vulnerable to listeria infection, which can lead to miscarriage.

For animals, symptoms of salmonella or listeria infection include lethargy, fever, vomiting, loss of appetite, and diarrhea, sometimes bloody. The FDA has not reported any confirmed illnesses in dogs, cats, or humans linked to the recalled lots so far.

Viva Raw has urged customers to safely dispose of the products to ensure children, pets, and wildlife cannot access them. Consumers are also advised not to Donate or sell the recalled food, and to thoroughly wash and sanitize food bowls, storage containers, and hands after handling.

Those who notice symptoms after exposure should contact their healthcare provider, while pet owners should reach out to their veterinarian if their animals show signs of illness. Refunds are available by contacting Viva Raw at info@vivarawpets.com or by calling 919-371-8882.

This recall is a reminder of the importance of food safety for both humans and animals. By staying alert to FDA advisories and practicing careful hygiene when handling pet products, families can better protect their health and the well-being of their companion animals.
