A new estimate from top economists suggests that corporate America’s carbon Pollution could cost society a staggering $87 trillion by 2050 — a figure that’s even larger than the entire U.S. stock market. According to a Bloomberg Opinion piece by Mark Gongloff, researchers from the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business and the Wharton School calculated the “social cost” of carbon emissions by major U.S. companies using updated metrics from the Environmental Protection Agency.

This figure — 131% of the total U.S. corporate equity value — puts into perspective just how expensive it is to keep burning fossil fuels. Despite claims that the transition to clean energy is too costly, the math is clear: doing nothing is far more expensive.

The $87 trillion estimate reflects how Pollution drives up costs tied to health care, extreme weather, property damage, and instability in agriculture and society. And this doesn’t even account for the entire global impact. For instance, a Nature study from Dartmouth and Stanford found that just 111 fossil fuel companies caused $28 trillion in global damage between 1991 and 2020. Names like Chevron, Gazprom, and Saudi Aramco are all high on the list.

Meanwhile, the International Monetary Fund reports that governments are still handing out $7 trillion per year in subsidies and tax breaks to fossil fuel producers. That’s enough to fund the entire energy transition multiple times over. According to BloombergNEF, it would cost $192 trillion to fully decarbonize by 2050 — and most of that would be invested in proven, increasingly affordable clean technologies.

It’s time to face facts: Pollution isn’t free. The real burden falls on all of us — and our planet.

If we want a livable future, we must stop funding destruction and start investing in clean, plant-based, and sustainable solutions. Your choices matter. Go green, go vegan, and Support policies that hold polluters accountable.
