Most of us have casually chewed gum without giving much thought to what it’s actually made of. But according to David Jones in The Conversation, the answer might leave a bad taste in your mouth—literally. That little wad of gum? It’s plastic.
Modern chewing gum is usually made with synthetic polymers like styrene-butadiene, the same material used in car tires. It also contains polyethylene (found in plastic bags) and polyvinyl acetate (yes, that’s in wood glue). Most companies avoid saying this outright, instead using vague terms like “gum base” on ingredient lists.
The result is a global plastic problem hiding in plain sight. With an estimated 1.74 trillion pieces of gum produced each year, and about 30% of each piece made from synthetic plastic, this adds up to more than 730,000 tonnes of non-biodegradable waste annually. Once tossed on the ground (as it so often is), gum sticks around for decades, eventually breaking down into harmful microplastics.
Efforts like the UK’s chewing gum task force and Dutch company Gumdrop have aimed to reduce the mess by promoting cleanup and recycling. But as Jones points out, these actions don’t tackle the root of the issue: the product itself. Like single-use plastics, gum Pollution needs a full systems rethink—education, transparency, regulations, and sustainable alternatives.
Let’s stop chewing on the problem. Try switching to plant-based gums, push for clearer labels, and call for policy that holds polluters accountable. Every piece of gum binned—or better yet, skipped—can be one less piece of plastic in our world.
