The Trump administration is making headlines again after exempting 47 coal-fired power plants, including the dirtiest one in the United States, from strict Pollution rules. According to Bloomberg’s Ari Natter, Talen Energy Corp.’s Colstrip plant in Montana is among those receiving a two-year waiver from regulations designed to control harmful emissions like mercury.
The White House claims the exemptions are necessary because Environmental Protection Agency rules created under the Biden administration could cause coal plants to shut down. They argue that the emissions-control technologies needed aren’t yet commercially viable. A spokesperson stated that the move would help power America’s “Great Comeback,” ensuring enough electricity for booming industries like AI data centers.
Environmental groups strongly disagree. John Walke, a senior attorney at the Natural Resources Defense Council, said, “These coal-burning power plants already have the Pollution cleanup equipment installed today, with one exception.” He added that companies could meet safer Pollution limits by making low-cost operational tweaks.
According to EPA data, Colstrip has the nation’s highest levels of fine particulate matter, a dangerous pollutant linked to asthma, heart and lung disease, and early death. Other big companies like Ameren Corp., Dominion Energy Inc., and NRG Energy Inc. are also benefiting from the rollbacks, with more than 60 individual units across the country receiving waivers.
As the U.S. government continues to prioritize coal, it’s more important than ever for individuals to step up. Supporting clean energy initiatives, choosing plant-based diets, and reducing personal carbon footprints can make a real difference. Let’s stay hopeful and take action for the planet, the animals, and ourselves—because the earth needs us now more than ever.
