The Trump administration is rapidly rolling back clean water protections, threatening decades of environmental progress. According to Rolling Stone’s Naomi LaChance, President Donald Trump, with Support from conservatives in Congress and the Supreme Court, is stripping down regulations that safeguard waterways under the Clean Water Act. These moves mostly benefit polluters, developers, and large industries — while leaving vulnerable communities at greater risk.
One of the biggest changes came after the Supreme Court’s 2023 Sackett decision, which removed protections for more than half of America’s wetlands. Wetlands are vital ecosystems that filter water, control floods, and provide habitats for countless species. Now, millions of acres are open to Pollution without permits. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin defended the rollback by saying it simply “follows the rule of law,” but environmental advocates like Mary Grant of Food and Water Watch call it “a callous disregard” for public health.
Industry groups are celebrating the deregulation, claiming it reduces “unfair burdens” on businesses. But as Drew Caputo from Earthjustice points out, weakening the Clean Water Act — America’s most successful environmental law — risks the health and safety of everyone who relies on clean water for drinking, recreation, and farming.
Meanwhile, the EPA has also targeted rules limiting Pollution from oil and gas operations and even tried to close its Environmental justice Offices, which protect frontline communities. Cuts to rural water programs and attempts to repeal lead pipe protections only deepen concerns.
At a time when clean water is more important than ever, these attacks are devastating. Let’s not lose the progress generations fought for. Support organizations like Earthjustice and Food and Water Watch, push your local representatives to strengthen state protections, and choose brands that value the planet and its people. Clean water is a right, not a luxury.
