Wildlife Conservation efforts worldwide are facing serious setbacks after budget cuts made by Donald Trump’s administration slashed funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). According to an in-depth article by Patrick Greenfield in The Guardian, hundreds of vital projects, from saving endangered lemurs in Madagascar to fighting illegal fishing in the Galápagos, are now at risk.
USAID has been a critical supporter of global Conservation, providing around $350 million in 2023 alone and averaging about 12.1% of global biodiversity funding between 2015 and 2022. These funds helped rebuild devastated ecosystems like Mozambique’s Gorongosa National Park, where elephant, lion, and painted wolf populations had made remarkable recoveries after years of war and poaching.
Experts warn that the sudden funding cuts could trigger a rise in poaching, trafficking, and habitat destruction. Species like rhinos, gorillas, elephants, and orangutans are particularly vulnerable. The situation is made worse by a political climate that views supporting Indigenous communities and Conservation as “too woke,” according to former USAID administrator Marcia Wong, who spoke with The Guardian.
Without USAID’s backing, many projects are being forced to lay off rangers and reduce patrols, giving transnational crime cartels an opening to expand their operations. Conservationists like Matthew Hansen from the University of Maryland emphasize that these programs aren’t just about saving animals—they strengthen global partnerships and promote stability.
If we care about the future of wildlife and the planet, now is the time to act. Supporting grassroots Conservation groups, switching to a plant-based lifestyle, and demanding stronger environmental policies are powerful ways we can all make a difference. Every choice counts—and together, we can stand up for the animals and ecosystems that need us most.
