Haitians are still dealing with repercussions from a decade of natural disasters.  Hurricanes Tomas wreaked major destruction in 2010 alongside a major, 7.0 magnitude earthquake about 30 miles west of Port-au-Prince, which killed nearly 250,000 people.  Hurricane Matthew followed in 2016, and 2018 brought a severe drought that impacted the water supply, agricultural production, and household income.  Furthermore, Haiti has been in the “throes of a political crisis” since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse on July 7.

In the midst of this suffering, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the Tiburon Peninsula in August 2021.  The 2021 earthquake left over 650,000 people needing emergency humanitarian assistance.  At least 2,248 people have died and 12,763 more are injured.  Worst of all, the earthquake destroyed over 60 local health facilities, and the health care system is unable to provide disaster relief—let alone cope with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and other public health issues such as cholera outbreaks.

The International Medical Corps is providing much-needed aid in the midst of this crisis.  At the request of USAID’s Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance, the Pan American Health Organization, and the Haitian Ministry of Health, they are seeing over 100 patients per day.  You can visit their website to donate, and you can pledge your Support to the essential relief work by signing this petition.
