Coffee, the daily ritual for millions, is facing a double blow: Climate change and trade wars. According to Grist, droughts, heat waves, and political tariffs are driving coffee prices to historic highs, leaving farmers and drinkers caught in the middle.
Brazil, the world’s largest coffee producer, has already seen harvests wither under record-breaking droughts. Vietnam, second in global exports, has faced heat waves that reduced yields of its robusta beans, a variety that typically requires less water and is more climate resilient. For smallholder farmers—who grow much of the world’s supply—these pressures mean thinner margins and, in some cases, uncertainty about whether to stay in the business at all.
But climate disruptions aren’t the only challenge. President Donald Trump’s second administration has announced sweeping tariffs, including a threatened 50 percent tax on Brazilian coffee imports and a 20 percent tariff on Vietnamese goods. Debbie Wei Mullin, founder of Copper Cow Coffee, told Grist she has already scaled back plans to help farmers transition to organic because tariffs are undercutting her business model. Economists warn that U.S. companies may respond by squeezing growers further or shifting to less sustainable sources—moves that would undo years of progress in environmentally conscious farming.
Coffee has always been relatively “price inelastic”—people don’t give it up easily. But experts now warn that higher costs could reshape the global market, with unpredictable impacts on farmers, consumers, and the climate. And with environmental threats already straining the crop’s future, tariffs add what Mullin described as “an insult to injury.”
As consumers, we can push back by choosing organic, fair-trade, and climate-conscious brands, supporting farmers who are fighting to adapt. A shift toward plant-based diets and sustainable choices in our daily routines can also ease the wider pressures that fuel Climate change. If we want coffee on our tables in the future, we need to protect the planet—and the people who grow it—today.
