Wildfires devastated Brazil’s Pantanal over the summer, scorching over 3 million acres—an area the size of New Jersey. The fires spread rapidly, endangering wildlife, including threatened species like jaguars. Many perished in the flames, while those who escaped suffered from severe burns and smoke inhalation.

One such jaguar, Itapira, was found lying motionless in a drainage pipe. Concerned for her well-being, a rescue team placed water nearby, but she didn’t move. After waiting a day without any sign of improvement, the team made the difficult decision to sedate her and provide the necessary medical care. Itapira had burns on all four paws, was severely dehydrated, and too weak to survive on her own.
