Amidst the chaos and destruction that often define war-torn regions, a remarkable story of courage, empathy, and compassion emerges in Joshua Zeman’s latest feature documentary, “Checkpoint Zoo.” The film delves into the gripping account of a daring animal rescue that unfolded during the early days of the Russian-Ukrainian War, where over 5,000 animals were trapped in a besieged wildlife park, stranded behind enemy lines.

Produced by Zeman and Zach Mortensen for Ghost Robot, with the backing of Noah Media Group financing the project, “Checkpoint Zoo” is a look into an extraordinary tale that captured the hearts of many. UTA Independent Film Group has joined the endeavor, spearheading worldwide sales of this inspiring picture.

The focal point of the story is Feldman Ecopark, an animal refuge situated in Ukraine’s second-largest city. As the war escalated, the park found itself precariously positioned between the invading Russian army and the Ukrainian front line. Amidst this grim situation, a group of courageous men and women decided to risk their lives for the animals trapped within the confines of the park, facing dwindling supplies of food and water.

The filmmakers were granted exclusive access to Feldman Ecopark, along with its dedicated employees. Additionally, they acquired hundreds of hours of video and sound recordings, meticulously documenting the harrowing evacuation efforts undertaken by the park’s keepers and volunteers.

Joshua Zeman, acclaimed for directing “Cropsey,” a documentary delving into the possible real-life inspiration behind a New York City urban legend, has shown his adeptness at capturing gripping narratives on film. His work also includes directing two true crime series, “Murder Mountain” and “The Sons of Sam,” both of which found a home on Netflix. More recently, Zeman’s directorial efforts led to “The Loneliest Whale,” executive produced by Hollywood superstar Leonardo DiCaprio, garnering three Critics Choice Awards nominations, including Best Nature Film.

Meanwhile, Zach Mortensen, with 25 years of experience in documentary film production, has proven his versatility as a filmmaker. His notable works include “Modulation,” an exploration of electronic music, and “Hell House,” which dives into the story of an evangelical megachurch’s Halloween spectacle. Mortensen’s creative genius is well showcased through Ghost Robot, a prominent New York City-based creative studio that he co-founded.

“Checkpoint Zoo” is poised to become a milestone in the world of documentary filmmaking, shining a light on the incredible human capacity for compassion even amidst the darkest of circumstances. Through this gripping tale of heroism and empathy, audiences will witness the indomitable spirit that drives people to rise above adversity and protect those who cannot protect themselves.
