The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned that up to 25% of those infected with coronavirus might not show symptoms, but can still spread the virus.

Due to the high incidence of symptom-free cases, the CDC is considering new guidelines for wearing masks in public. On March 31, the CDC was weighing the issue and in the process of determining new guidelines. CDC guidelines on whether people should be wearing masks are “being critically re-reviewed,” according to Dr. Redfield. Many health experts have already recommended that people wear masks in addition to social distancing to help prevent the spread of the disease.

Dr. Robert Redfield, CDC director, shared some guidelines in a broadcast interview March 31, “This helps explain how rapidly this virus continues to spread across the country because we have asymptomatic transmitters and we have individuals who are transmitting 48 hours before they become symptomatic.”

“Asymptomatic” is a little confusing for some people. Dr. Jeffrey Shaman, an infectious diseases expert at Columbia University, spoke to the Chicago Tribune to explain the rationale, “The bottom line is that there are people out there shedding the virus who don’t know that they’re infected.” These people could feel fine and are still out and about without taking precautionary measures.

Health officials are urging everyone to continue social distancing and following CDC orders as they come.
