Cat Finds Forever Home After 19-Month Shelter Stay

black cat

Saltine, affectionately known as Salty, has spent the better part of her life in a shelter, eagerly awaiting the day she finds her forever home. Seized from a hoarding situation in June 2022, Salty has spent a staggering 588 days at the Tuscarawas County Humane Society in Ohio.

Upon her arrival, Salty was in a bad state, suffering from severe flea infestation and significant hair loss. However, with the dedicated care and attention of the shelter staff, she underwent a remarkable transformation, now boasting a luscious black coat and a playful demeanor.

Despite her charms and the tireless efforts of the shelter, Salty remains overlooked. At just 6 pounds, she is spayed, vaccinated, and equipped with flea and tick preventatives.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, millions of pets enter shelters across the United States each year, with dogs and cats accounting for a significant portion. Despite adoption efforts, around 920,000 surrendered animals are euthanized annually, highlighting the urgency of finding homes for shelter pets like Salty.

Unfortunately, statistics reveal that black cats like Salty often face longer wait times for adoption due to lingering superstitions associating them with bad luck. Despite this, supporters have rallied around Salty. They rallied so much that Salty found a loving home with Amy VanValkenburg. She commented around two weeks after the original Facebook post saying, “Just a quick update. We are the lucky ones who got chosen to be Saltine’s new family! We are from Shelbyville Kentucky and are making the trip tomorrow and bringing her home to live out a wonderful life. She will be spoiled, loved, and treasured for the duration of her life on our little piece of heaven. We will post an updated picture of her once we get her settled in.”
