Just like humans, different dogs express and receive love in different ways. For some dogs, cuddling on the couch is the ultimate expression of affection. For others, it could be a willingness to toss their ball till they fall. Recently, a Newsweek article revealed the five canine love languages, according to the veterinarian Dr. Sarah-Anne Reed.
While praise is important to most dogs, some canines crave kind words more than others. If a dog is slow to respond when called or chooses to ignore you, this is a sign that praise may not be particularly important to them. However, if they come bounding when you call, and are overjoyed to be told how amazing they are, this may be your canine companion’s love language.
Is your pup always begging to be pet? Not content unless they are cuddled up right next to you on the couch? Their love language is likely physical touch. Fifteen minutes of petting has been proven to reduce doggie stress, so it’s no wonder! However, Dr. Reed notes that if a dog is unable to settle unless they are next to their human, it could be a symptom of anxiety.
Similarly to humans, some dogs love to receive gifts! This can include new toys. For some pups, a new toy is exciting and makes them feel loved and appreciated. If your dog is this way, their canine love language may be gift-giving! Just be sure to provide durable, size-appropriate toys made especially for dogs. Additionally, to avoid breaking the bank, humans can consider alternating the toys available to their dogs from week to week.
Spending quality time with your pooch is important for all dogs! Taking time to interact with canine companions lets them know they are loved and appreciated. Put away your phone or turn off the TV while playing with them and see how they perk up!
Most dog parents will do a lot for their canine companions. Although your dog may not be aware of the extra effort it takes to get up early for their pre-work walk, or the errands you have to run for them, it is still special. For many dogs who lack loving homes, these things would be life-changing.
Remember, although there are multiple canine love languages, almost all dogs appreciate all five! While one may be more meaningful to your dog, it is important to maintain a balance between all of them.
