The US smartphone market welcomes a unique player, Murena’s Fairphone 4, which champions sustainable practices over high-spec features. Launched in Europe in 2021, this device has recently become available stateside, touting a commitment to social responsibility and user privacy.

Manufactured using fairly sourced and recycled materials, the Fairphone 4 provides a humane working environment with employees receiving a living wage. What sets this phone apart is its innovative modular design, making it easy to repair and customize, thus avoiding the need for regular upgrades. Key components such as the battery, camera array, USB-C port, loudspeaker, and body are user-replaceable, with Murena providing spare parts on their website.
Operating on Murena’s /e/ OS, a modified Android system, the Fairphone 4 aims to enhance user privacy. Gaël Duval, Murena CEO, conveyed their focus on meeting growing market needs for sustainability and privacy rather than concentrating on incremental megapixel upgrades.
The Fairphone 4 stands alone in the US market as the only TCO Certified option, a sustainability certification assessing social manufacturing responsibility, environmental impact, user health, and product longevity. Further bolstering its eco-credentials, it sports the German government’s Blue Angel label, recognizing its durability, energy efficiency, recyclability, and low emissions.
To reduce e-waste, Murena does not include a USB cord, plug, or headphones with the Fairphone 4, urging customers to reuse existing accessories.
The Fairphone 4’s focus on privacy extends to its operating system. Unlike Google, which has faced multiple privacy and location-tracking lawsuits, Murena’s /e/ OS is a ‘deGoogled’ Android version, aiming to minimize data scanning and location tracking. Users can download Google apps, but personal details are not shared with Google.
While the Fairphone 4 opens new avenues in sustainable smartphones, it does have some tradeoffs. Murena recommends using only T-Mobile as a carrier, and the phone is currently available only on backorder. Prices start at $629 for the 128GB model and $699 for the 256GB version. As consumer focus shifts towards repairability, Murena’s Fairphone 4 marks an important step forward in sustainable technology.
