Notorious luxury shoe brand, Koio, is stepping into a new era of sustainable fashion with the launch of their vegan shoe line, Pale Blue Dot. In their quest to reposition luxury, co-founders Chris Wichert and Johannes Quodt have reimagined the use of Italian craftsmanship, merging it with a commitment to sustainable practices.

Koio has already shown its dedication to sustainability by launching the world’s first fully regenerative sneaker. With Pale Blue Dot, they’re turning up the heat, aiming to source all materials from regenerative farms by 2025. Named after the iconic 1990 Voyager 1 photograph of Earth, this line offers stylish, eco-friendly footwear at a more affordable price of $165 a pair.
The innovative construction of these shoes combines apple leather uppers and recycled rubber soles with cork insoles. Quodt believes that “in 10 years, plant-based materials will be superior—in terms of sustainability, function, and touch, look, and feel—to the best materials we have available right now.” The initial range includes four colors and a variety of sizes, available online and in their New York and Los Angeles stores.
The launch of Pale Blue Dot enters Koio into the burgeoning vegan footwear market, predicted to reach a staggering $76 billion by 2030. They join the ranks of brands such as Veja, Rothy’s, and Flamingos’ Life, which have recognized the rising consumer demand for cruelty-free, sustainable options.
But Koio doesn’t stop at vegan options. The brand has also tackled the major environmental issue of non-biodegradable sneakers. With most sneakers taking up to 1,000 years to biodegrade, Koio responded with Mello – a 99% biodegradable sneaker made from regenerative leather, rubber-tree milk soles, and plant-based insoles.
The brand’s ambitious journey toward sustainability didn’t stop there. Koio sources leather from non-industrial Swiss farms to craft their regenerative sneakers and uses vegetable dye in a German tannery. They also incorporate Forest Stewardship Council-certified and recycled rubbers for the soles.
As Koio strides forward, they focus on creating a 100% biodegradable and regeneratively-sourced shoe. This is a clear call to action for us as consumers. By choosing sustainable and ethical options like Koio’s Pale Blue Dot line, we can walk the talk and help drive the change toward a more sustainable future. So, let’s put our best foot forward and make a difference with every step we take!
If you have the choice, why not choose vegan? Large fashion brands are making it easier for consumers to choose ethical options. While some may argue that it’s difficult to shop sustainably when buying new clothes, we appreciate the steps these brands have taken.
