Bumblebee

Recent studies highlight a dire situation for bumblebees as their nests overheat, potentially leading to significant population declines globally. Research published in “Frontiers in Bee Science” reveals that bumblebees, crucial pollinators for ecosystems and agriculture, struggle to maintain the necessary cool environments for their nests amid rising temperatures and frequent heatwaves triggered by the climate crisis.

The study, examining 180 years of bumblebee research, indicates that most bumblebee broods cannot survive temperatures above 36°C. Bumblebees are adept at thermoregulation—worker bees fan the hive by beating their wings to cool it down. However, as global temperatures increase, this method becomes less effective, endangering the survival of their broods.

Peter Kevan, lead author and professor emeritus at the University of Guelph’s School of Environmental Sciences in Canada, emphasized the critical temperature limits for bumblebee nests. If the internal temperature exceeds about 35°C, the brood may perish, explaining the declines observed in North America and Europe. The study advocates viewing the nest as a “superorganism,” stressing the importance of the nest’s overall health rather than just individual bees.

The research also draws attention to the unique vulnerability of bumblebees to climate change due to their preference for cooler climates. Unlike most insects that thrive in tropical conditions, bumblebees flourish in cooler areas like the Alps and Britain. This adaptation makes them particularly susceptible to Global warming.

Dave Goulson, a professor of biology at the University of Sussex, noted the adaptive challenges bumblebees face, such as migrating to higher altitudes to escape heat, though this is not a long-term solution. With habitat loss and rising temperatures acting in tandem, the future for these pollinators looks bleak.

Bumblebees are vital for the pollination of numerous plants, including essential crops like tomatoes, apples, and blueberries. The decline of these insects could have severe repercussions for food security and biodiversity. Efforts to mitigate this decline include habitat restoration and reduced pesticide use, but broader action to control Climate change remains crucial.
