A North Carolina family’s nighttime routine turned into a scene from a horror movie when a toddler’s innocent claim about monsters in her closet unveiled an unexpected reality – a massive beehive housing more than 50,000 bees.
Ashley Massis Class, a mother of three children under four years old, and her husband were taken aback when they investigated why a few bees had made their way into the attic of their home. Little did they know, a terrifying surprise awaited them.
After consultations with pest control experts and beekeepers, a thermal camera finally unveiled the truth – a colossal hive nestled inside the wall of their daughter’s room. What the toddler had perceived as a lurking monster turned out to be a hive silently growing for nearly eight months.
Massis Class vividly described her initial shock, recalling, “At first, I thought it was a body. I was like, ‘What is that?’ And he says he thinks it’s a hive.” The revelation came with a visual straight out of a horror film – bees swarming out of the wall, with honey oozing like blood down the pink walls of her daughter’s room. Several extractions later, tens of thousands of bees and a honeycomb weighing over 100 pounds were relocated to a bee sanctuary. Massis Class’s documentation of the ordeal on TikTok garnered widespread attention, emphasizing the surreal nature of their experience.
Despite the relief of removing the bees, the aftermath includes substantial repairs to their home. The bees caused approximately $20,000 worth of damage to electrical wires, expenses not covered by their homeowner’s insurance.
