There is nothing quite like a sweet interspecies friendship – especially if it ends up in a serious happy ending. In Illinois, a blind raccoon and his two friends who happen to be … black kittens, started to cooperate and breakfast together on a friendly woman’s porch every day. What the story led to, was something the kittens probably needed most – a proper home.
The resourceful raccoon had visited the yard of his human friend, Eryn, since 2009 – to scavenge for some tasty food, Love Meow reports. He visited around breakfast time, between six and nine in the morning, and he would often come back for an extra meal later during the day. “His eyes shone bright green during the day. He was at least partially blind, walked into things, and was afraid of the wind, high grass, birds, and snow,” Eryn said.
He was kind of a loner, up until October 2014, when two black kittens showed up in the yard during his regular mealtime. They soon became friends and started to follow the raccoon around. It was not long before the cats learned to tag along when their raccoon friend lead them to his regular snack spot.
Unfortunately, this great teamwork had to end in June 2015, when the raccoon passed away. As he did, however, he already outlived the typical lifespan of a racoon, that is two-three years, which was even more special since the animal was blind.
“Turned out that I needed the black kittens as much as they needed me. Taming them helped me slightly cope with the loss of my mom and my 15-year-old cat within nine days of each other,” the cats’ guardian said.
The kittens, just around six months old, now have a good forever home – and they found it in the first place purely thanks to their unlikely but always helpful raccoon friend!

This was a great story, sad that the blind racoon passed away but at least he/she had friends. And also happy that the black kittens were adopted.
