In an extraordinary moment caught on film, a lion saves a pregnant hyena from a pack of wild dogs in Kingdom, a new BBC documentary narrated by Sir David Attenborough. The series, which took five years to film in Zambia’s wild Luangwa Valley, follows the intertwined lives of lions, hyenas, leopards, and wild dogs—each struggling to survive amid growing human pressures.
According to Yahoo News, Kingdom captures never-before-seen animal behaviours, from a clever hyena hiding stolen food underwater to wild dogs heroically rescuing one of their own from a crocodile’s jaws. “We could never have written a script like this,” said executive producer Mike Gunton. “Only nature could write this script.”
Behind the cameras, the Zambia Carnivore Programme worked closely with filmmakers to monitor and protect the region’s wildlife. The group’s data—on animal diets, births, movements, and deaths—helps shape real-world Conservation strategies. But despite the breathtaking imagery, the show also confronts a harsh truth: Africa’s great predators are in trouble. Habitat loss, wire snare traps, and dwindling prey populations threaten their survival, altering pack sizes and behaviours in ways scientists are only beginning to understand.
In one heartbreaking scene, a wild dog reappears after losing a leg to a snare, only to be welcomed back by its pack—proof of the compassion and resilience that define life in the wild. Series editor Simon Blakeney calls Kingdom “a message of optimism in the face of some very concerning trends,” reminding viewers that hope still exists if humanity acts fast.
As we witness nature’s raw beauty and complexity, it’s a clear reminder to protect our shared Earth—whether by supporting Conservation groups, eating more plant-based meals, or simply respecting the wild spaces that keep our planet in balance.
