In a harrowing operation near Cleveland, Ohio, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and local authorities rescued over 250 animals from deplorable conditions at a fur and urine farm. The Grand River Fur Exchange, left unmanaged after the owner’s recent death, became the site of unimaginable suffering for animals like foxes, raccoons, coyotes, and wolf-dog hybrids. These creatures endured freezing temperatures in wire-bottom cages, many maimed or emaciated from neglect.
The Ashtabula County Commissioner’s Office enlisted the HSUS after discovering the dire situation. Rescuers found animals living amidst filth and suffering from injuries likely caused by traps and improper confinement. Tools for electrocution, a common but brutal fur farming method, were also discovered. Some animals had to be humanely euthanized due to the severity of their condition.
“This is one of the most horrific situations I have ever seen—the terror and pain was palpable,” stated Adam Parascandola, HSUS Vice President of the Animal Rescue Team. He emphasized the suffering inherent in the fur trade, which lacks federal welfare regulations in the United States. The farm was licensed by Ohio authorities, yet there were no state-level standards to ensure humane treatment.
Documents uncovered on-site revealed the farm’s connection to Fur Harvesters Auction, North America’s last fur auction house, which exports pelts globally for fashion and home décor. PJ Smith, HSUS Director of Fashion Policy, condemned the industry, noting, “The U.S. fur trade has long operated in the shadows with zero oversight.”
While many of the rescued animals found refuge with wildlife rehabilitators and sanctuaries, the operation highlighted the urgent need for regulatory reform. Local officials, including Commissioner Casey Kozlowski, praised the HSUS for their Support and called for stronger safeguards to prevent future cruelty.
