Researchers have recently identified dozens of viruses circulating among animals on fur farms in China, some of which have the potential to infect humans. This discovery has raised significant concerns, with experts warning that fur farming could facilitate the spread of new diseases, similar to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Virologist Edward Holmes, who has extensively studied COVID-19, believes that the global fur farming industry presents a high risk for triggering new pandemics. Holmes is one of the authors of a new study that analyzed virus samples from 461 animals, including minks, rabbits, foxes, and raccoon dogs, collected between 2021 and 2024. The majority of these animals were from fur farms, although some were wild or farmed for food or traditional medicine.
The study, published in Nature, detected 125 viruses, including 36 previously unknown viruses. Of these, 39 were found to have a “high risk” of crossing species, with some having already made the jump to humans, such as hepatitis E and Japanese encephalitis. The research also highlighted the presence of multiple strains of bird flu and seven types of coronaviruses, though none were directly related to SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19.
One particularly concerning discovery was the detection of a virus related to MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) in minks, which had previously only been found in bats. Holmes emphasized that this virus, known as the Pipistrellus bat HKU5-like virus, should be closely monitored due to its potential danger to humans.
Scientists have long been concerned that fur farms could provide an environment where farmed animals become infected with wild animal viruses, which could then spread to humans. The researchers called for stricter surveillance of animals on fur farms, particularly species like minks and raccoon dogs that are known to carry high-risk viruses.
The study also referenced Denmark’s controversial decision to cull its entire farmed mink population in 2020 to prevent the spread of COVID-19, though the practice has since been reinstated. With growing evidence of the risks associated with fur farming, experts like Holmes advocate for the global shutdown of the industry to prevent the emergence of future pandemics.
