In a troubling event over the weekend, wildlife officers shot and killed three coyotes at the San Francisco Botanical Garden after one of the animals bit a five-year-old girl. The attacks took place within Golden Gate Park, where the girl was attending a supervised summer camp.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife reported that two coyotes were shot on Saturday, followed by another on Sunday. According to spokesperson Patrick Foy, the girl was bitten on Friday while playing, prompting immediate medical attention at a local hospital. Her mother, Helen Sparrow, shared with the San Francisco Chronicle that her daughter had fallen while running and was bitten on the buttocks.
Standard protocol dictates that any wild animal attacking a person is killed to allow for rabies testing and DNA sampling. A DNA sample was collected from the girl’s wound, and efforts are underway to identify the specific coyote responsible. If the samples do not match, further actions may be necessary to ensure public safety, including additional trapping or murder of other coyotes in the area.
The botanical garden, which was temporarily closed following the incident, reopened on Monday. The girl received stitches and a rabies vaccine, although health officials noted that rabies is uncommon in coyotes.
