When you’re on a walk with your dog, you’re probably focused on enjoying the fresh air or looking at the trees, while your best friend walks alongside you. There are few instances where you would anticipate something happening during your peaceful walk. But heartbreakingly, that’s exactly what happened when a 14-year-old boy was recently out with his lab, Casey behind their house in rural Idaho. The pair found something that “looked like a sprinkler.” When they went to investigate, it exploded, sending orange dye everywhere, killing Casey within minutes.

The device turned out to be a M-44 cyanide trap that had been left behind the family’s property by the USDA’s Wildlife Services program. Thankfully, the 14-year-old boy was not poisoned but now he is dealing with the loss of his best friend, Casey. According to a petition on Care2, during this month alone, the same type of trap that killed Casey, also killed two other beloved dogs in Wyoming as well as an endangered Oregon wolf.

Help us get justice for Casey. Demand the USDA Wildlife Services program end their use of lethal traps!

Despite their name, it seems that there is very little wildlife being protected by the Wildlife Services. According to the petition, in 2015 the program killed 68,905 coyotes, 731 bobcats, 480 bears, 385 wolves and 284 mountain lions. Wildlife Services not only kills predators but other animals – up to 1.5 million per year, all to “make life safe for livestock and game species.” The program is not required to be held accountable by the public, therefore this shocking death rate and their actions are often kept hidden from public view.

The USDA’s Wildlife Service program is not only a huge waste of tax payer dollars, but it kills millions of wild animals each year and its reckless actions are impacting innocent people and their pets. Please join us in signing this petition to demand that the USDA Wildlife Services program end their use of lethal traps.

  1. The Wildlife Service is a problem that needs to be dealt with. They should not have the authority to kill anything but poachers. What psychopaths work for it?
