The benefits of meditation aren’t really up for debate. They’ve been proven, and there are plenty of pluses that come from incorporating meditation into our lives. Guided meditations are available for free on the internet. Even the basic notion of focusing on the breath going in and out, allowing other thoughts to pass through but moving back to the breath, is enough and more difficult. Another option is just checking in with our bodies, acknowledging each body part and each thought. This truly is about doing something positive for ourselves, and others will benefit from a better version of ourselves as well.

Journaling and keeping a gratitude list are great tools to help improve your mood and prioritize problems and fears. It can also provide an opportunity for positive self-talk to identify any negative thoughts that you may have. A daily journaling and gratitude practice is good for you physically, mentally, and emotionally and can help you clear your head or even reduce the effects of mental illness. It can be as simple as taking 5 minutes out of your day to write down whatever comes to mind without overthinking what you are writing.

It’s difficult to be mindful when our lives are cluttered. That’s both mentally and physically. The mental and the physical world are intimately connected. Cleaning up our physical spaces, then, can help with our mental states. If we want to feel good in a place, we should be aware of how that place makes us feel. What do we like or not like, need or don’t need? Start from there. If we fill our spaces all the time, then it can be difficult to let new life in. This is about being aware of where we are and what we are doing. If we are decluttering, we are doing something positive, and that should feel good.

Try spending an extra 15 minutes outside every day by going on a walk at lunch, going on a hike, or even something as simple as taking the long route home. We bet you’ll start to notice the difference in your mood pretty quickly.

Self-care plays an important role in cultivating inner peace. Self-care doesn’t always have to mean bubble baths and face masks. It can be anything that brings you joy, whether that means baking, reading a new book, or binging your favorite movies or shows. Even if it’s just for an hour a day or an entire day once a week, let yourself off the hook once in a while and permit yourself to slow down from the business of everyday life.
