2022 is the perfect time to consider the different ways in which we can improve our health, mental wellbeing, and make the planet a better place to live. There are so many new trends out there, and resources at our disposal, which make these changes a no-brainer. These lifestyle tips can be easily implemented into your daily routine, but can potentially have huge positive impacts on our own lives and the environment. With so many different health and wellness trends circulating on social media, it can sometimes feel overwhelming and like you don’t know where to start. We’ve compiled a list of 10 popular trends that we think will be huge in this new year, and will hopefully give you the inspiration you need to thrive and flourish!
1. Sustainable eating
This year, we expect to see an increase in the number of people choosing healthy, natural foods that are not only good for your body, but are good for the environment as well. Dairy and meat replacements such as the Impossible burgers, and JUST Egg, give people the option to enjoy plant-based versions of their favorite foods while being kind to animals and the planet. We expect to see a rise in more plant-based food products in addition to a rise in the effort to reduce food waste.
2. Coffee alternatives
This year, we expect more people to start enjoying innovative, and enjoyable coffee alternatives, which can deliver more sustained energy compared with other caffeinated equivalents. Some of these coffee alternatives include matcha, chicory root, Yerba mate, and a wide variety of mushrooms. These alternatives solve an issue that many people experience with traditional coffee, which is the dreaded energy spike and fall, as well as the anxiety that is often felt. While some coffee alternatives contain caffeine like coffee does, you will feel a nice boost of energy, without the crash.
3. Accessible mental health treatment
2021 was a hard year for many of us and has caused increased feelings of isolation, depression, anxiety, and PTSD. This year, we expect to see significant growth in the demand for virtual mental health counseling as well as phone applications that can help empower people to develop healthy ways of dealing with stress and negative emotions.
4. Immunity-boosting foods
With multiple resurgences of COVID spreading throughout all parts of the world, boosting your immune system can’t hurt. The foods you eat play a huge role in supporting the immune system and, as a result, our ability to fight disease. Fermented foods, citrus fruits, leafy greens, blueberries, and dark chocolate are some examples of immunity-boosting foods. Consider adding some of these wonderful natural foods into your diet as a way to enhance your immune system, or stop a cold in its tracks.
5. Mindful drinking
This year, we predict a rise in mindful drinking. The beauty of mindful drinking is that it allows you to easily appreciate the middle ground and cultivate more balance in your life. While not everybody wants to be a part of “Dry January”, there’s another way to become more mindful. You don’t need to completely eliminate alcohol, you can consider reducing it if you dread hangovers and all of the consequences that are associated with drinking. Drinking consciously allows us to stay in control, slow down, and become more aware of our actions so we can feel our best this year.
6. Sound healing
If you’ve never heard of sound healing before, it’s a healing therapy that uses music to improve physical and emotional health and well-being. It seems as though it is taking over the wellness industry with its popularity. While this practice has been around for many years, it can now be seen all over TikTok! Different sounds can trigger certain emotions or memories for different people, and it’s through this experience that people are able to explore their innermost thoughts, feelings, and beliefs and ultimately heal. This practice is so great because of its convenience. While psychoacoustics can be done with the help of professionals, you can also do this in the comfort of your own home for free!
7. Stress tracking
There are numerous things you can do to better manage stress. This year, we predict that more people will track their stress levels using a smartwatch device. These devices can track physical or emotional stress signs in your body, digestion issues, and an elevated heart rate. After you’ve logged a good number of stressful occasions, you can reflect on what you’ve recorded and c Consider what causes you to react to stress the most in your everyday life. When you can identify your stressors, you can also reveal which coping methods work best for you.
8. Meditation apps
If you’ve ever tried meditation apps, then you know how helpful they are for improving mental health. Not only can they help tackle stress and anxiety, but they also tackle mental health issues such as depression, lack of focus and productivity, sleeplessness, addiction, low self-esteem, and more! This year, we expect to see more people using apps that provide personalized-based meditations so you can get the most out of what they have to offer, have a more positive outlook on life, and feel your absolute best.
Journaling is a great tool to help improve your mood, prioritize problems, and fears. It can also provide an opportunity for positive self-talk to identify any negative thoughts that you may have. Journaling is good for you physically, mentally, and emotionally, and can help you clear your head, or even reduce the effects of mental illness. It can be as simple as taking 5 minutes out of your day to write down whatever comes to mind, without overthinking what you are writing. We think this simple practice will continue to help many people strive towards more positive mental health this year.
10. Eco-friendly menstruation
On average, women have approximately 450 periods in their lifetime, and more people are becoming aware of the environmental impact of tampon and pad usage in terms of plastic pollution. They produce about 200,000 tons of waste a year in the U.S. alone. Luckily, there are plenty of alternative options available that are better for the environment. Reusable pads, underwear, and menstrual cups are becoming more popular and increasingly more available. This year, consider making the switch that is better for your health and the planet!
