Depression has spiked since the pandemic began, and for many people, even taking care of day-to-day chores, like cleaning your house, can seem mentally exhausting. Unfortunately, a messy environment can build on those feelings of depression and can create a bad cycle. Instead of being helpless against the clutter or getting overwhelmed with chores, this TikTok user shared some easy tips to implement that can make your life easier if you suffer from mental illness.

If you wake up and you’re having a bad hair day, instead of spending your entire morning trying to tame it, this TikTok user recommends filling a spray bottle with water, spraying down the frizz, and scrunching it in with your hands so that it can re-style itself without you having to do much work. The second tip is to throw out or recycle containers if you have moldy food leftover in the fridge. She explains that it’s more important for your kitchen to be a safe place rather than becoming overwhelmed with the thought of a sink full of dishes. Lastly, if you don’t have the energy to change your pillowcase and do laundry, simply cover your pillow with a clean towel to prevent breakouts.

Although serious mental health issues such as depression and other psychiatric disorders require appropriate management by a doctor, the positive impact that simplifying your life and maintaining a clean and organized living environment can make is huge. If you’re ready to prioritize your well-being and want to manage your mental health, give these mental health hacks a try!
