Unfortunately, the world is not a very peaceful or safe place for many individuals. From conflict to abuse to exploitation, there is so much cruelty inflicted on both humans and animals. While this can get disheartening and difficult to hear about, petitions are a great way to use your voice for good. Just by signing one, you are a part of helping those who are not treated fairly. You can even share them with your friends and acquaintances to increase your impact.

Through petitions, we can reach those in power and demand justice for others. They are valuable tools for making positive changes in the world. If you are looking for a way to help animals and humans, here are 10 petitions you should sign this week, including Demand the FBI Investigate the Colorado Mass Shooting at an LGBTQ Nightclub as a Hate Crime, Tell the FDA to Finally Phase Out Animal Testing, and Tell Virginia to Finally Make Declawing Cats Illegal!

We want to thank you for being the change you wish to see in the world and giving a voice to the voiceless.

1. Demand the FBI Investigate the Colorado Mass Shooting at an LGBTQ Nightclub as a Hate Crime

Source: NBC News/Youtube

The night before Transgender Day of Remembrance, a gunman murdered five people and injured over 25 people in an LGBTQ+ nightclub in Colorado Springs. In less than two minutes, the gunman opened fire before a brave person tackled and stopped him before he took more lives.

This mass shooting is just the latest in the over 600 mass shootings that have happened just this year in the United States. This shooting came at a time when hateful anti-LGBTQ legislation is in talks, and the community is feeling the effects.

What’s worse is that law enforcement and prosecutors had the chance to possibly stop this from happening. The gunman was arrested last year after he threatened his mother with a bomb and other weapons. No charges were filed against the man, and Colorado’s red flag law was never used.

Now, the mass shooting is being investigated by the FBI, but we need to make sure that there is no oversight and that it is investigated for what it was: a hate crime. The gunman needs to be held accountable and we need justice for the victims.

Sign this petition to demand the FBI investigate the shooting as a hate crime.

2. Restrict Florida Medial Boards From Being Able to Take Away Gender-Affirming Health Care for Children

Source: 10 Tampa Bay/Youtube

The Florida Board of Medicine and the Florida Board of Osteopathic Medicine have banned gender-affirming care for kids. The two have officially banned the care for children despite the widespread agreement on the importance of gender-affirming healthcare access for trans and gender non-conforming children. LGBTQ+ youth should have a right to health care and we cannot let these two boards take that away from them.

Experts all over agree that gender-affirming care is crucial not only for children’s health and well-being but also for their mental health. The American Academy of Pediatrics, the Endocrine Society, and the American Medical Association all agree that care is vital for protecting the health of young people who identify as LGBTQ+.

Even worse, these two boards are either partially or entirely appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate. Unfortunately, this move comes as no surprise given the latest transphobic and anti-LGBTQ+ legislation in the state of Florida. There is absolutely no reason that these medical boards should have the right to take away basic human health care for children.

Sign this petition to demand the Florida legislature pass a law to restrict medical boards’ ability to deny kids life-saving gender-affirming care!

3. Tell States to Follow Massachusetts and Ban Throwing Away Clothing

Source: WWLP-22News/Youtube

In a huge win for the environment, Massachusetts passed a law that outlaws throwing out textiles, garments, and other forms of clothing. It is now against the law in Massachusetts to throw out clothes, and instead, residents must recycle their old clothing and other textiles instead of tossing them. State environmental officials say they believe Massachusetts is the first state to ban the disposal of textiles.

In the age of fast fashion, waste is a huge problem. 13 million tons of clothes end up in our landfills, and fast fashion has changed the way that we think about clothes. It’s always best to recycle clothes and go to second-hand or thrift stores when looking for new clothing. This new legislation will help keep these things out of landfills and give them a second chance at life.

The new legislation also targets retailers who are widely responsible for the waste of clothing. Large businesses will be targeted in the state to do their part to reduce textile waste, while individuals are encouraged to recycle their clothing too.

Sign this petition to tell the other 48 states’ Environmental Protection Agencies to follow in Massachusetts’ footsteps and mandate clothes recycling!

4. Tell the FDA to Finally Phase Out Animal Testing

Source: Sentient Media/Youtube

Finally, the FDA has signaled that it wants to end animal testing after decades and decades of hard work by animal rights activists. This could save thousands of animals that are used and abused in testing facilities. However, the agency does not have a timeline on this, they have only so far requested $5 million in its upcoming year budget to research how to make this shift.

Animals in laboratories experience horrific suffering and death. On top of that, the animals come from breeding facilities where they often aren’t given proper veterinary care, food, or water and live in terrible and cramped conditions. The passage of this bill will be a huge step forward for non-human animals and society as a whole.

According to PETA, the National Institutes of Health wastes $12 billion annually on animal testing that does not lead anywhere. These experiments on animals fail 90 percent of the time! The research used on animals rarely correlates when it is tested on humans, making it a waste of money and unnecessary. Monkeys, mice, rats, and dogs are all used in animal experiments nationwide. It’s time countries ban animal experimentation altogether, as it also hurts humans.

Sign this petition to demand the FDA set a goal for ending animal testing and request more funding to make this goal happen!

5. Make Sure This Animal Abuser Dog Groomer Can Never Have Animals Again

Source: CBS 12 News – WPEC/Youtube

When a woman took her dog, Barley, to the groomer twice a month, she thought that she was providing her dog with a loving and caring service that he enjoyed. That is until Barley’s mom saw video evidence of the American Dog Pet Grooming facility’s co-owner punching her dog directly in the head with a closed fist. He punched three-year-old barley again.

Barley’s mom began to wonder if the dog’s recent anxiety and fear of being alone were related to the abuse and trauma he was experiencing at the groomer. Barely’s anxiety had gotten so bad that the vet had prescribed multiple medications.

Unfortunately, it turned out that Barley was just one of the many dogs that the man was abusing. Multiple employees resigned because they were so disturbed by what they saw. One employee began taking undercover videos to gather evidence and finally catch the man.

In one video, the co-owner can be seen “grabbing the dog by the back of the head, pulling the dog’s hair, and pushing the dog down in the sink.” Detectives learned about the abuse when a caller complained about the co-owner and alleged that one dog had died from the abuse.

Since then, authorities have arrested the man on animal cruelty charges, but we need to make sure that he is not able to work, live, or keep any animals ever again.

Sign this petition to demand authorities ban this animal abuser from ever owning, living with, or working with animals in the future.

6. Tell Virginia to Finally Make Declawing Cats Illegal

Source: 13News Now/Youtube

A new bill in Virginia could outlaw cat declawing procedures across the entire state, and there is no reason that this should not pass. Maryland and New York have already made declawing illegal, and it’s time for Virginia and the rest of the states to outlaw this cruel and unnecessary practice. Several cities across the US have also banned the cruel surgery, including Los AngelesPittsburghSan Francisco, and Denver.

Declawing is a surgery that is performed by veterinarians across the world, despite the growing awareness of how inhumane the practice is. Declawing isn’t just simply removing a cat’s fingernails (but imagine having all of your fingernails yanked out, that’s awful enough.) Declawing is ten separate amputations of the last bone and nail in each of their toes. For humans, it would be like cutting off each finger at the last knuckle.

There are so many humane and non-cruel ways to get your cat to stop scratching your furniture. There is no reason that any state should continue to allow this painful procedure to continue.

Sign this petition to demand the Virginia General Assembly pass this bill into law and finally ban declawing!

7. Everett Massachusetts Banned Animal Testing, Tell the Entire State to Follow Suit

A city in Massachusetts has banned any animal testing within the city. Everett chose to ban animal testing after other nearby cities chose to allow the new construction of a science research center that will likely include animal experimentation labs. To send up against this, Everett banned animal testing in the city. Previously, Everett had no laws against animal testing, but luckily now, they stepped up for what is right and banned it to make sure that everyone knew that cruel animal testing has no place there.

Animals in laboratories experience horrific suffering and death. On top of that, the animals come from breeding facilities where they often aren’t given proper veterinary care, food, or water, and live in terrible and cramped conditions. The passage of this bill will be a huge step forward for non-human animals and society as a whole.

According to PETA, the National Institutes of Health wastes $12 billion annually on animal testing that leads nowhere, these experiments on animals fail 90 percent of the time! The research used on animals rarely correlates when it is tested on humans, making it a waste of money and unnecessary. Monkeys, mice, rats, and dogs are all used in animal experiments around the nation. It’s time countries ban animal experimentation altogether as it hurts humans as well.

Sign this petition to urge lawmakers in Massachusetts to pass a law banning all animal testing inside of their state.

8. Ban Animal Abuser From Owning Animals Again After He Abandoned Them and Let Them Starve to Death

An anonymous caller contacted the local Humane Society in Rogersville, Tennessee, to report an overwhelming smell of decomposition by a neighbor’s home. The caller noticed the sound of dogs barking and tipping inside the home, but no one had been seen at the residence for nearly two weeks.

Police discovered that the man who rented the property had abandoned the animals and left them to die. He had been accumulating animals but one day decided to walk away from them and go stay with a friend. While he was gone, they starved to death.

Investigators at the scene said they noticed a smell immediately on arrival. They found decomposed animals in cat carriers and cages that were left just right in the driveway. The home was full of rotting animal remains as well. Some were reportedly so badly decayed that authorities couldn’t identify the pet’s species.

Detectives and rescuers with the Humane Society found dogs in trash bags, guinea pigs, hamsters, mice, and two aquarium turtles that were “so badly decomposed, their eyes were rotted out.” Some of the animals miraculously survived but were all severely emaciated, dehydrated, and covered in infections.

The surviving animals have now received care from a veterinarian and are on the road to recovery. Authorities found and arrested the animal’s keeper, but we need to make sure that he cannot keep any animals in the future.

Sign this petition to demand that authorities ban this cruel animal abuser from keeping animals ever again.

9. Demand Florida Remove Questions About Menstrual Cycle For Student Athletes

Source: NBC News/Youtube

A terrifying new form that was introduced by the Florida High School Athletic Association puts trans students and students seeking reproductive care at risk. The online form was introduced and asks female athletes to disclose information about their menstrual cycles. There is no reason that an athletic association would need any of this information, and make matters worse since the form is online, it won’t be protected by HIPAA. This means that the information could be given to third parties that are not medical providers.

Although the students are not required to answer, many might not know this, and these questions are unnecessary, are a breach of privacy, and they pose real risks to the students who answer them. Their answer could be used to out trans students and even to punish students who seek abortion services. The Florida High School Athletic Association must immediately remove these questions from the online form.

Sign this petition to demand that the Florida High School Athletic Association immediately remove these questions!

10. Tell the IUCN to Protect Big Tuskers and All Elephants from Poachers

Source: WION/Youtube

Dida, possibly the largest female tusker elephant in Africa, has passed away from natural causes. The elephant lived in a protected and free Tsavo East National Park in Kenya. She was believed to be between 60 and 65 years old, which is well within the range of wild elephants’ natural life. Unfortunately, most elephants will never reach this age because of outside threats like poaching and climate change. Dida’s death reminds us that we need to ensure all elephants have the safety and protection that she had.

According to estimates, up to 100 African elephants are killed every day. Most are slaughtered by poachers who will rip them apart to steal their ivory, meat, and other parts to sell illegally in the wildlife trade. Killing these animals not only hurts their herds which are deeply rooted in community bonds but also threatens the African elephant species as a whole.

We can take away an important lesson from Dida’s passing, and that is that all elephants deserve protection from poachers, as she had. This is why the IUCN needs to speed up its efforts to protect big tuskers.

Sign this petition to demand the IUCN increase efforts to protect Big Tuskers and all elephants from poaching!
