Greta Thunberg, the 20-year-old Swedish environmental activist, was arrested during a protest outside a luxury five-star hotel in London. The protest targeted the Energy Intelligence Forum, an annual gathering of chief executives from major oil and gas companies.

The protest, organized by climate group Fossil Free London, saw Greta Thunberg and other demonstrators blocking entrances to the Intercontinental Hotel, which was hosting the conference. The delegates attending this conference represented significant players in the fossil fuel industry, including TotalEnergies, Shell, and Aramco. Their goal was to disrupt the proceedings and draw attention to the environmental degradation perpetuated by these companies.
The Energy Intelligence Forum had not responded to requests for comment at the time of publication, leaving many to speculate on the impact that Thunberg’s arrest and the subsequent protests might have on the discussions within the conference.
Before her arrest, Thunberg made her intentions clear. She stated, “We have no choice but to disrupt” because “our world is being swept away by greenwashing and lies.” Her impassioned words resonated with those gathered outside the hotel. She went on to emphasize the harm the fossil fuel industry has caused by actively distracting and delaying necessary action on Climate change. Loopholes have been created, allowing these companies to continue their operations while our planet suffers the consequences. “We are choking from their fumes,” Thunberg declared.
Greenpeace, another prominent environmental organization, joined the protest, condemning the undue influence of the fossil fuel industry on UK and global climate politics. Together, they organized a protest that blocked all entrances to the hotel from 8 a.m. local time. To amplify their message further, two climbers abseiled from the top of the building, unfurling a 98-foot-long banner reading “Make Big Oil Pay.” This visually striking demonstration emphasized their demand for accountability and change.
In a press conference earlier that day, Greta Thunberg took aim at “spineless politicians” for their connections with oil industry lobbyists. It was a stark reminder that political leaders must prioritize the planet over profit and corporate interests. Thunberg’s unwavering commitment to calling out those in power who enable the fossil fuel industry is a testament to her determination.
This is not the first time Greta Thunberg has faced police intervention in her climate activism. In January, she was detained during a coal mine protest. In July, she was fined by a Swedish court for her participation in a protest that blocked oil tankers in Malmö harbor, Sweden. Thunberg’s continued activism and the sacrifices she makes to draw attention to Climate change illustrate her dedication to the cause.
The protest on Tuesday marked the first day of a three-day action aimed at shutting down the Energy Intelligence Forum conference. Greenpeace, Fossil Free London, and Thunberg herself have collectively sent a resounding message to the world: the time for climate action is now, and those who stand in the way of change will face unrelenting opposition.
