Aubrey Plaza, the White Lotus star, has taken the term “tree hugger” to a new level in a recent ad campaign from MilkPEP (Milk Processor Education Program). In the ad, Plaza announces her latest role as the co-founder of Wood Milk, a product she claims to be “the world’s first and only milk made from wood.”

In the ad, Plaza asks, “Have you ever looked at a tree and thought, ‘Can I drink this?'” She goes on to assure viewers that her artisanal milk will be the only milk they will ever want to drink. However, Plaza eventually reveals that Wood Milk is not real, and the ad is actually a “Got Milk?” campaign emphasizing the benefits of dairy milk.

The ad campaign, created by the agency Gale, aims to make a point about dairy in a somewhat entertaining manner. It was directed by Hannah Levy and co-written by Neil Casey, both of whom are alums of the popular comedy show Saturday Night Live. “People are making milk out of anything these days, but there’s only one real milk,” said Gale’s chief brand and experience officer, Winston Binch.

However, the ad has faced backlash from Plaza’s fans, primarily consisting of Gen Z and Millennials. These generations have the lowest dairy milk consumption due to concerns about sustainability, health, and the perception that it is unnecessary.

The campaign alienated Plaza’s 4 million fans, triggering a wave of negative reactions. Compounding the problem, the campaign’s timing coincided with the worst farming catastrophe in 200 years, leading people to reconsider their dairy consumption. MilkPEP’s apparent insensitivity to the tragedy drew even more negative attention to the dairy industry.

Interestingly, Plaza has been a vocal supporter of almond milk, even though her ad mocks plant-based alternatives. This inconsistency further fueled criticism from her fans.

As milk consumption hits an all-time low in the US, MilkPEP is expected to increase its marketing efforts in the coming months. However, the recent backlash highlights the importance of understanding and addressing the concerns of younger generations about sustainability and health.
