Nearly 20,000 cattle died in a fire that started on Monday night at the South Fork Dairy farm in Castro County, Texas.

Officials in Texas say that only a small percentage of the animals at the facility survived the fire. Those animals have now been moved to a separate area. According to Castro County Sheriff Sal Rivera, an explosion went off at the farm, and the fire spread to another building where the cattle were.
“There’s some that survived, there’s some that are probably injured to the point where they’ll have to be destroyed,” Rivera said.
The Texas State Fire Marshal’s Office said that they will continue to investigate the cause of the fire but they say it appears that it may have started from a machine overheating. A woman that was working there was injured and was taken to a hospital in critical condition, but all of the other workers on the farm have been accounted for.
Animal Welfare Institute reported that the fire was the deadliest in cattle deaths since they first started recording barn fires in 2013. This is absolutely heartbreaking. These cows died a horrifying death in a place where they should not have been. Their screams are a heartbreaking reminder of the cruelty that humans place on these animals.
Unfortunately, far too many people still believe the lies that dairy cows are happy cows with their babies by their sides who enjoy being milked by hand by compassionate farmers. Please do your part to help dispel the dairy myths and spread the message wherever you can. Only through increased awareness will this type of gross suffering begin to become a thing of the past. We need to fight to dismantle the systems that cause this pain and suffering.
