Eating more plant-based meals is one of the best ways to reduce animal suffering in the animal agriculture industry. Beyond that, it’s also a great way to help the environment and combat climate change.
With the current state of the world being threatened by a host of issues–from politics to nuclear warfare to Global warming–it’s never been more important to get people to eat more plant-based meals and slow the effects of Climate change.
To help restaurants guide consumers to purchase more plant-based dishes over meat dishes, the World Resources Institute conducted a study to see if exposing consumers to environmental messaging prior to ordering would impact their meal choices.
What they discovered is that “displaying thoughtfully framed environmental messages on restaurant menus can significantly increase customers’ uptake of lower carbon, plant-rich dishes.”
According to a press release, the organization tested various messaging to see how it would impact consumers and the two most effective messages doubled the chance that a person would order a vegetarian item from the menu.
The leading messages were “small changes can make a big difference,” and “join a movement of people choosing foods with less impact on the climate.”
WRI hopes that this information can be used and applied in a variety of restaurant settings, from online to in-person.
