Biden Administration Launches Interactive Map Showing Climate Disasters Across the Country

The Biden administration has launched a new website that shows how climate change is causing disasters across the country. The Climate Mapping for Resilience and Adaptation (CMRA) website shows how five major climate disasters are affecting the US. The map is also supposed to help local policymakers to see how they can adapt in the coming decades.

The map is divided into five key threats: extreme heat, drought, wildfire, inland flooding, and coastal flooding. On the map, users can interact and zoom in on the impact on areas and even enter an address to pull up data organized by census tract, county, or tribal land. The CMRA Assessment Tool provides information on past, present, and future climate conditions. It can and should be used to understand exposure in your area so that effective planning can be done to create more resilient infrastructure in communities.

According to the website, 114,119,787 people are currently experiencing drought in the US. 36,850,190 people are experiencing inland flooding, while 4,578,228 people are experiencing coastal flooding. There are currently 305 wildfires across the country.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) contracted the geographic information system software company Esri to develop this tool.

“Building climate resilience starts with communities, leaders, and other decision makers understanding their specific climate threats,” NOAA Administrator Rick Spinrad said in a press release. “CMRA provides the public with the same NOAA-powered data that the federal government relies on every day to make sound decisions about climate preparedness.”
