Utah Bans Battery Cages in Win for Hens!

Battery Cage

Utah governor Spencer Cox just signed a bill banning battery cages at Utah’s egg farms. SB 147 will make five million hens cage-free by 2025!

Utah joins other states, including Michigan, Oregon, Washington, Massachusetts, California, Rhode Island, and Colorado, in banning battery cages for hens. The bill also mandates protections for hens, including perches, nest boxes, and scratching areas. As legislation in Massachusetts and California move ahead, 50 million additional hens will live in cage-free environments.

“This law shows how legislators, animal protections organizations and industry can find common ground in forging a more humane future,” said Josh Balk, vice president of the Farm Animal Protection campaign at the Humane Society of the United States in an emailed statement. “This law reflects the growing concern for farm animals and how critical it is to allow them —at minimum—to be cage-free and able to engage in basic, natural behaviors.”
