This week, PETA sent a letter to British Columbia Minister of Agriculture Lana Popham and Federal Minister of Agriculture Marie-Claude Bibeau to address Animal Justice’s recently-released footage of abuse on Cedar Valley Farms.
The footage shows one of the workers beating cows with canes and wrenches, as well as other forms of abuse. The organic dairy farm had its license revoked after the video was released and investigated. Seven workers at the farm pleaded also guilty to animal cruelty after the footage was released. Now, PETA wants to make sure that this farm is never up and running again as the owners have shown a disgraceful lack of care for the animals.
PETA President Ingrid Newkirk said, “It doesn’t get much worse than this, as cows were beaten, struggling to stand, and crying out for their calves at Cedar Valley Farms. Suspending this operator’s license is the first step, but we’re calling on provincial and federal officials to ensure that these abusers never go back to business.”
The video footage showed a wide variety of inhumane and cruel practices at the dairy farm, such as the workers repeatedly hitting and kicking cows. It also showed mother cows crying for their calves that were being taken away. Several cows were shot in the head and left to die, conscious for who knows how long before succumbing to their wounds.
Hopefully, PETA’s letter will encourage government officials to take a stand against the horrible cruelty at Cedar Valley Farms, and open people’s eyes to the cruelty that is inherent to animal agriculture.
