A proposal in Oregon could forever change the laws surrounding the ownership of animals and animal breeding.

The proposed amendment would essentially criminalize all forms of raising animals for the intended purpose of being used for food. This would cover practices such as breeding and slaughtering.

Cases of abuse, poor conditions, and injuries are often brushed under the rug in the name of good animal husbandry. Thus, this amendment would also remove the laws surrounding good animal husbandry that exist to protect ranchers and others from the charges of animal cruelty and abuse.

This Oregon proposal would ultimately criminalize all forms of animal husbandry, as it always results in some form of injury – fatal or otherwise. Since this amendment would overshadow the good animal husbandry laws, animals would get more protection.

This amendment includes a law that any other form of breeding rather than animal intercourse would be considered to be a sexual offense to animals. This would make all artificial insemination, as well as the extraction of sperm for the purpose of breeding, illegal.

Considering how radical this amendment is, there has been plenty of controversy surrounding it. The proposal would certainly change the way breeding is done forever. Laws like this one bring these issues to light, making animal welfare concerns more public and, hopefully, more likely to be addressed.
