The travel company Expedia is going to stop selling holiday trips that include captive dolphin and whale shows.
Over recent years the call to ban these types of captive shows has been increasing as people become more aware of how cruel they are. These marine animals are complex and social creatures that are not meant to live in pools nor be trained to do tricks. The entire industry is inhumane and a danger to these species.
Expedia announced on Twitter, “We recently adjusted our animal welfare policy. As a result, attractions and activities that involve performances by or interactions with dolphins and other cetaceans will no longer be available on our sites. Seaside sanctuaries that provide captive animals with a permanent seaside living environment are allowed if they are accredited and do not feature interactions or performances.”
This is great news, especially to activists that have been calling on the popular travel company to ditch ocean creature attractions. In 2019, Virgin Holidays also made a significant step by refusing to sell tickets to these types of shows and forms of entertainment.
Katheryn Wise, from the wildlife charity World Animal Protection, said, “This is amazing news and something that we have been campaigning for since 2019. We are so pleased that they have listened. Travel companies play a huge role in driving captive dolphin entertainment, and as one of the largest travel companies in the world, we are delighted that Expedia Group is making a stand. It’s time for other travel giants to do the right thing and follow suit.”
Hopefully, this will be a wake-up call to other travel companies and encourage them to ditch marine entertainment as well. The more companies that refuse to Support these cruel attractions, the harder it will be for the dolphin and whale entertainment industry to continue exploiting animals.
