Prominent animal activist, Wayne Hsiung, has been convicted of larceny as well as breaking and entering after rescuing Rain, a sick baby goat, from a farm in 2018. Hsiung live-streamed the open rescue to show what goes into rescuing a factory farm animal.

In his opening statement to the court, Hsiung said, “The question of this case is a really simple one. The question is: ‘Is compassion a crime?’”

Sadly, because animals are still considered property, charges were brought against Hsiung for rescuing the goat. A few hours later Hsiung was able to avoid jail time as it was decided that he would get two years of probation. He plans to appeal the court’s ruling, according to an email from DxE.

This was the first trial in the US that centered around an “open rescue,” a form of nonviolent direct action in which activists reveal their identities while saving inhumanely treated animals.

There will be no true justice until animals are no longer seen as property – until they can be rescued without putting the activist’s life on the line and they are no longer exploited profit by humans.
