Learning how things tick is an obsession of mine, forever curious about the workings of the natural world. I'm deeply interested in understanding how to live in harmony with our environment, especially the animals that share our planet. I know we will look back on how they were once treated with horror. I truly believe we can counter this if more people understood how much these creatures have in common with us, how endlessly enchanting they can be. Read more about Sally Courtois Read More
Podcasts are an excellent way to optimize your time and learn new things while enjoying yourself. Looking to aid in the fight against Climate change while hanging your laundry out to dry? Want to stay up to date on the world’s latest environmental policy changes or learn how you can lead a greener life? All while weeding your urban garden (why are there so many weeds in your window box)? Or just want to learn some fascinating elephant facts while muted in your zoom meetings?
For those that know the power of the pod, we’ve compiled a list of some of the most informative and entertaining shows about our natural world.
The ladies on The Weirdest Thing I Learned This Week spend most of their week researching and curating bizarre facts about the natural world for Popular Science’s quarterly magazine. They’ve decided to share with us all the wondrously strange things that didn’t make the final cut. They present the most interesting of topics in a light and conversational way, making it an easy and entertaining listen.
“What do we need to do to solve the climate crisis, and how do we get it done?” Former This American Life journalist Alex Blumberg and super cool marine biologist Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson, team up for a deep dive into the big issues and the actions we can take against them in How to Save the Planet. With lots of journalistic experience and plenty of policy knowledge, this duo gets top-notch coverage and it’s a treat to listen to.
Marjorie Alexander felt there weren’t enough young women of color in the climate movement. For this reason, she turned her master’s thesis on the evolution of sustainable values into a podcast, A Sustainable Mind. Her weekly interviews with environmental experts cover everything from microplastics and ecosystem vulnerability to greener event planning and sustainable intimacy products. Each episode concludes with actionable advice on the topic covered.
“A monthly podcast that will bring you out on the trail, focusing on the science of our North American wildlife.” The hosts, x and x, each present their own in-depth nature study while out in the field. In The Field Guides, topics like winter wildlife, hibernation, salamanders, spruce grouse, and ice spikes are all delivered in a lighthearted way.
”Volcanoes. Trees. Drunk butterflies. Mars missions. Slug sex. Death. Beauty standards. Anxiety busters. Beer science. Bee drama…” If you dabble in science and you know your pods, this one likely needs no introduction, so it just gets a conclusion. Alie Ward’s quirky take on the vast and diverse world of scientific professions is certainly worth a listen. Check out Ologies!
“Inspiring stories about the amazing lives of birds.” These short but very sweet bird profiles are perfect for a quick chore. Mulch your flower bed to continuous play and you’re sure to feel a little enchanted. Other podcasts on Birdnote‘s site also address things like nature Conservation but this one’s just fun!
Two intersectional vegans lead friendly and thought-provoking conversations about “all things vegan” on Bearded Vegans. These laid back dudes make the toughest of vegan topics easier and invite listeners to join in. They almost never talk about their beards.
This award-winning news format by Public Radio International “is your go-to source for the latest coverage of Climate change, ecology, and human health.” Host Steve Curwood reports weekly so you’re sure to get full coverage on the most current climate events. Living on Earth is SERIOUS about our planet.
“Exploring our paths to holistic healing, ecological regeneration, and true abundance and wellness *for all*.“ Green Dreamer is an interview-based pod hosted by Kaméa Chayne, a leader in the ethical and sustainable living movement. This one is especially great for creatives looking to live and work in the most eco-friendly way. You’ll find yourself informed and inspired to pick up that passion project you forgot about.
