Crumbs, known as the world’s fattest cat, recently passed away after a short stay at a feline weight loss center in Perm, Russia, where he had been shedding pounds in a hopeful attempt at a healthier life. Crumbs, whose Russian name was “Kroshik” (meaning “Crumbs”), weighed in at an extraordinary 38 pounds, largely due to a diet of scraps and biscuits during his time in the basement of a Russian hospital.
At the weight loss facility, Crumbs initially showed signs of improvement, managing to lose 7 pounds through a monitored diet and exercise, including sessions on an underwater treadmill. Tragically, however, he began having breathing difficulties and passed away over the weekend. Vets believe that Crumbs’ substantial layers of fat had concealed underlying cancerous tumors, which went undetected in scans and tests. These tumors may have triggered multiple organ failure, according to Galiana More, the owner of the Matroskin cat shelter, which oversaw his care.
Reflecting on Crumbs’ hidden illness, More shared that cats often conceal health issues until it’s too late. “Cats always hold on to the last,” she explained. “Kroshik had no shortness of breath, no digestive problems.” Despite their constant health checks, Crumbs’ illness remained undiscovered until his sudden decline.
Though a full post-mortem was still pending, the shelter staff acknowledged the difficulty of determining whether his weight or hidden tumors were the primary cause of his death.
